Under his consultancy firm Advanced e-Financial Technologies, Inc., established since November 2000, Ralph conducts many consultancy projects for many leading financial institutions to assist them with either creative financial product innovations as well as developing many new financial markets in the emerging economies of Asia, the Middle East as well as Eastern and Central Europe where he spent most of his successful investment banking career in the 90's.
In 2005, Ralph assisted China Everbright Bank with the first domestic RMB denominated interest rate swap in the inter-bank market. Due to its ability to help the bank manage its asset and liability match, the bank became the first bank to introduce the long term fixed rate mortgage loans to the entire Chinese home owners market, as chronicled in the WSJ article.
With this new availability of long term fixed rate loans, Chinese business entities finally got to compete with American, Japanese or European companies on an equal basis at the global stage in terms of managing their own borrowing cost. Global MNCs doing business in China could hence manage their overall interest rate risks in the domestic currency RMB as well.
Looking back, the creation of the fixed rate mortgage offerings seems to be a very timely contribution. Chinese homeowners could now get to avoid a US style subprime mortgage crisis.
